About Kalavantin Trek
Trekkers, both amateur and professional, love the challenge of a good monsoon trek. And there are few places in India that offer as thrilling and picturesque a monsoon trek as Kalavantin in Maharashtra. This towering fort, located near Panvel in the Raigad district, is one of the most popular monsoon treks in Maharashtra. The views from the top of the fort, especially during and after a rain shower, are simply breathtaking. But it’s not just the views that make Kalavantin such a popular destination for monsoon trekkers. The fort itself is an amazing feat of engineering, with its fascinating history dating back centuries.
This trek is quite challenging, but the rewards are great. You’ll be treated to amazing views of the Western Ghats, and the experience is truly exhilarating. Kalavantin Durg trek is a difficult grade trek in the Sahyadri – Raigad region of Maharashtra, India. It’s highly exposed, without any railings which makes this a really thrilling experience and is not recommended for beginners. Adjacent to Kalavantin Durg is Prabalgad. If you’re an experienced hiker, you can complete both of the hikes in one day.
Kalavantin Durg trek is a 10 km long (return) journey standing at 2,300 feet (701 m). You will pass through a small hamlet at Prabalmachi where you can get food and refilled your water. The trek is surrounded by a dense forest, and the route is well marked. The best time to plan monsoon treks in Maharashtra is after the first few rainfalls of June or July.
History of Kalvantin
The Kalavantin fort was built by the Maratha ruler Shivaji in the 17th century. It was designed to be impregnable and served as a strategic outpost for Shivaji’s forces. Today, the fort is in ruins, but it still retains its original charm and appeal. Trekkers can explore the various chambers and secret passages of the fort, and marvel at the engineering skills of its builders.
Kalavantin Durg was used as a watchtower and is located right next to Prabalgad Fort on the old Mumbai Pune route. The beauty of this trek is the amazing rock-cut steps that zig-zag their way up the mountain to take you to the top of the fort. One can get a panoramic view from the top, not to mention the thrill of an exposed climb via the stairs.
I’ve been connected with LBYD since 2019 and the most recent trek, post lockdown, was to Kalavantin Durg. It was an impeccable one. It was all very well executed and coordinated. Trek leaders were always attentive, friendly and responsive. I look forward to exploring more and more places with this amazing gang.❤️
